Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) today released its 2009-2010 All Star teams and once again, it showed the tremendous talent throughout the league.  "This was very tough this year," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  "We have so many teams and so many great players, it was really difficult and we do feel that we've left quite a few players off that definitely deserved recognition for their outstanding play.  One thing is for sure, I'd put either the East or West team up against any team in professional basketball, including the NBA, and it would be very competitive."

March 14,
Newark Sports ExaminerJason Lockhart

No. 5 Jersey Express traveled 12 hours by bus to Lexington Catholic High School (KY) to play an intense playoff game against No. 4 Bluegrass Stallions on Saturday night. Despite a high level of energy through 48 minutes of basketball, the Express failed to pull a clutch performance in the last minute of the American Basketball Association quarterfinal.
“We were down by two points with less than 3:00 to go in the game, but we couldn’t get over that hump,” said Express team president Marsha Blount. “We kept the game close up until the last minute.”   FULL STORY:

Goodman embraces role as team captain

January 19, 9:37 PMNewark Sports ExaminerJason Lockhart
Jersey Express rookie guard Troy Goodman was named the team captain shortly after former team captain Dwayne Howell resigned from the team three weeks ago to join the Washington Generals. Goodman scored a team-high 23 points with six assists and five rebounds in the team's 90-79 win against the Maryland Marvels on Saturday. The team captain after the game talked about his new leadership role.
"It definitely boosts up my confidence level," said the 6-0 guard. "With me being a rookie and captain of the team, it's a real good feeling. The coach [Cassandra Smith] and [team president] Marsha Blount has their trust in me. That's why I go out and play with a lot of heart."
Goodman, an East Orange native, is averaging 15.0 points, six assists, and three steals per game. He was recruited during the summer by former head coach Quaasim Austin and participated in all of the team workouts.  Goodman was one of the first recruits signed by the Express. By far, he has not disappointed the five-year American Basketball Association franchise, according to Blount who was thrilled to have the rookie player on the team roster.
"He really wants to win a championship," Blount said. "He's from East Orange and we play our home games here. He's a local guy who is given the opportunity to showcase his talent. The Newark and East Orange fans need to come out and see this guy perform on the professional level."   Goodman's future goal is to play pro basketball overseas. However, the first priority is to lead the Express to the ABA Playoffs and make a run to the championship.  Goodman graduated from Newark Central High School in 2004. He went on to play college basketball at Los Angeles Pierce College where he averaged 19.0 points, six assists, and five rebounds per game.  The Express will be back at East Orange Campus High School to play the New York City Thunder this Saturday evening at 7. Both teams last played each other on Dec. 13 with the Thunder winning the game 102-85.

Jersey Express head coach Cassandra Smith in Saturday's win had to make new defensive adjustments at halftime to avoid a second consecutive loss to the Maryland Marvels. After playing the first half close to their division rivals, the changes on defense sealed a 90-79 victory at East Orange Campus High School.

EAST ORANGE – There was no sense of nervousness in Cassandra (Sandy) Smith’s voice during pregame as she predicted a win. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Smith reminded me of the prediction during a timeout before her Jersey Express finished off the New York Red Riders 138-110 Saturday night in East Orange.

Smith, coaching her first home game as the interim head coach, described the style of coaching she employed on the Express since taking over the reins.

JORDAN FOWLER HANGS A FRANCHISE HIGH
49 POINTS IN ROAD WIN

Express Return Home this Saturday to Host
New York Red Riders

East Orange, N.J. (Monday, January 4, 2010) – It turned out that the only thing that could stop Jersey Express (5-2) guard Jordan Fowler this past Saturday in a 131-116 win over the New York Red Riders was the final whistle to end the game.  The East Orange native came out on fire and stayed hot the entire way, scoring a franchise record 49 points while adding 12 rebounds and six assists.

“I felt good on Saturday night, and my teammates found me,” Fowler said of his hot hand. “The coaches told me to be more aggressive, so I looked for my shot more.”

Mirroring the team-first philosophy that is stressed by the Express coaching staff, Fowler commented on the importance of the outcome in that Northeast Division match-up.

“I'm just happy that we won the game,” he continued.   “We needed to get back to winning after losing two straight.”   Express President Marsha Blount was quick to acknowledge the importance of Fowler to the team.  “With the loss of two starters, we definitely looked for more scoring out of Jordan,” she said.  “We're down 40 pts and 18 rebounds per game with Samar Battle and Dwayne Howell receiving contracts from the Globetrotters and Generals, respectively.  The whole team stepped it up on Saturday, and we filled some  holes with quality players that will make up those numbers nicely.”

The Express return home to East Orange Campus High School this Saturday when they host the Red Riders at 7:00 p.m.  The theme of the night will surround the Essex County School Systems, and a special halftime appearance will also be made by Webstar and S&S from HOT 97.  All student tickets for this homecoming will be only $5, and general admission adult tickets are $10.  In anticipation of this night for the Essex County Schools System, the Express players and coaching staff have been making the rounds throughout the area, visiting each school that contacted them for tickets to the game.  Anyone who wishes to preorder tickets can still do so by emailing info@jerseyexpress.net, and management from the Express will arrange to have its players available for delivery of the tickets at a school function.

The Jersey Express is a member of the American Basketball Association and is currently amid its fifth season in the ABA.  The team plays its home schedule at East Orange Campus High School. The Express made the playoffs in each of their past two seasons and reached the ABA Elite Eight last year in Nashville, Tennessee.

Featured half-time Artist: Spotlight Ray

East Orange, N.J. (Wednesday, December 9, 2009) – The Jersey Express has been getting it done on the court this season, and the local New Jersey media has been taking notice.  Currently sitting on a 3-0 record, the Express will host East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser in addition to having TV media News 12 New Jersey filming a feature this Sunday when the team takes on the New York City Thunder at East Orange Campus High School at 2:00 p.m.

“I'd like to thank Mayor Bowser for his support, along with the East Orange Board of Education for allowing us to utilize East Orange Campus High School as our home venue,” Express President Marsha Blount commented.  “Without the support of Derrick Johnson, head girl’s basketball coach at the high school, this partnership with East Orange would not be possible.”

The Express have made it a mission to be active within the community, and Blount says that the team will continue to show that type of commitment.

“Our goal has always been to become a part of the communities in which we play,” she said.  “Being able to mentor the youth in our community is also extremely important to us, and that's why we utilize some students as our game day interns to show them what it takes to prepare for a game.”

Additionally, Blount and the Express coaching staff give a strong look at players that come from the surrounding community.

“Many of the players on the team live here in the community,” she remarked.  “Jordan Fowler, Samar Battle and Troy Goodman are all residents of East Orange.  Dwayne Howell, Elijah Thorpe, and Jamie Sowers are from Newark, and Antoinne Morgano is from Irvington.  Now, we look to the community to support this undefeated team that wants to bring a championship back to New Jersey.”

Before the Sunday match-up with the Thunder, the Express will host the Maryland Marvels on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets for all Express home games are $10, and season ticket packages are still available through the team website at www.JerseyExpress.net.  Also, businesses and organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities with the Express can contact the team at info@jerseyexpress.net.
